Love for the tribe never fades: InnoGames celebrates 20 years of hit game Tribal Wars
The year is 2003. Netflix is sending DVDs by mail. Myspace has gone live, and the first Call of Duty is hitting the shelves. In the same year, Hendrik and Eike Klindworth and Michael Zillmer publish the browser-based empire-building strategy game “Tribal Wars” and create the basis for InnoGames GmbH, founded in 2007.
20 years later, Tribal Wars (German: “Die Stämme”) is an award-winning classic of the genre with a lifetime playtime of 48+ million days and a lifetime revenue of 180+ million Euros. Thanks to 100,000+ active players (46% of whom have been with the game for 5 years or more), it is also still alive and kicking. Those who have long since turned to other games still like to tell stories about their experiences. Of legendary tribal feuds and grueling battles, but also of gatherings, friendships and even weddings in “real” life, which would not have been possible without their shared passion. That is why this year, the 20th anniversary of the game is themed “Love for the tribe never fades.”
But even for those involved in its development, working on Tribal Wars was, is and will remain something very special, as the video linked in this press release demonstrates.
“Without Tribal Wars, InnoGames may not exist today. If it did, it would probably be a very different company. Many employees who came to us through the game over the years – or have even been on board since the very beginning – now play a significant role in building InnoGames’ future. This goes beyond any of our wildest dreams in 2003, but we couldn’t have wished for it to play out any better. Our goal is to ensure that players can still enjoy Tribal Wars for many decades to come. To that end, we will continue to support the Tribal Wars team in making the game a little bit better every day. At the same time, we sincerely thank everyone who has made Tribal Wars what it is today,” commented Hendrik Klindworth, CEO and co-founder of InnoGames, on the anniversary.

About Tribal Wars
Tribal Wars (www.tribalwars.com) was developed by the later InnoGames founders Hendrik and Eike Klindworth and Michael Zillmer and first published in June 2003. This made it one of the first browser strategy games ever. It is now an award-winning classic of the genre, available in over 30 languages and also playable on iOS and Android devices. Each player starts as the chief of a small medieval village. The goal is to gradually expand it, conquer other villages, and eventually build a powerful empire together with others as part of a greater tribe. Only those who tactic skillfully, use resources wisely and constantly expand their sphere of influence through diplomacy or coordinated attacks have a chance of success. Tribal Wars is free-to-play without restrictions. However, players may choose to make in-game purchases.
