GDC Sponsor Q&A: Adobe’s Jeremie Noguir Promises A GDC Of Substance

Are you ready to attend GDC 2020 in San Francisco next month? While you’re planning out what to see and do at the show,  don’t overlook your opportunity to check out the offerings from an array of sponsors who help fuel the games industry — including our Diamond Partners, whose support plays an integral role to the success of GDC.

To give you a better sense of what the expect from the show and Diamond Sponsor Adobe we got in touch with Principal Product Manager Jeremie Noguer to find out more about the company’s plans for game dev support, Substance improvements, and what you can learn from Adobe at GDC 2020!

Could you please introduce yourself and what Adobe is showing off with Substance at GDC this year?

JN:My name is Jeremie Noguer. I’m a Principal Product Manager at Adobe, focusing on users from the Entertainment industry: Game, Animation and Visual Effects. This year we’ll showcase the latest versions of the Substance tools, discussing Adobe’s plans for 3D and game developers during our Substance Day, and we will be welcoming the Adobe Medium team, who just joined us in January.

What are some new advancements in Substance that 3D modelers should know about?

JN:Substance Painter has been receiving game changing updates recently, with the integration of our automatic UV feature, and Photoshop brush support. At GDC, we will also show what’s coming next to the app, including a revamped export pipeline, UDIM support, various quality of life improvements and a new scripting API.

Substance Alchemist has also been getting a number of incremental updates after its initial release last November, allowing artists to easily convert photos and scans to full PBR materials and blending them together to create an infinity of material variations.

How is Substance helping developers make game assets for VR and AR content?

JN:VR and AR are becoming more and more demanding as the quality and length of experiences increase along with hardware capabilities, and Substance is the easiest way to get assets to look real and grounded in these worlds, with tons of acurate PBR materials, smart materials that adapt to any object, and displacement support, allowing typically flat surfaces to pop out and create more immersive experiences.

What kinds of questions should developers bring to Substance’s booth at GDC?

JN:Any kind! We’ll have many artists and developers on staff at the booth and we’re always happy to answer any question about Substance, 3D creation and pipeline best practices, give career advice and even try to fix an issue or bug on the spot!
