game – the German Games Industry Association has published its first guide on environmental and climate protection. The free online publication provides an overview of ways in which a company can become more climate-friendly. Alongside practical tips and background information, such as how to calculate and reduce carbon emissions, concrete examples of successful sustainability projects in games companies are presented, including initiatives for reforesting, cleaning up the oceans or communicating knowledge about climate change. In interviews, InnoGames, GameDuell and the Good Evil also explain how environmental and climate protection can be integrated into both the company and also games.

‘Protecting our environment is currently one of the biggest challenges facing our society, and as the games industry, we are naturally playing our part,’ says Felix Falk, Managing Director of game. ‘The aim of our Environmental Guide is to share the experience acquired to date by companies in the games industry and provide ideas for concrete ways to operate and do business even more sustainably. It’s great to see how aware and willing the industry is, with a whole range of measures already in place. We want to support this journey with our guide and other initiatives such as the partnership with the Green Games Summit in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Conference.’

The guide is available free of charge in German at www.game.de/game-umwelt-guide. The English version of the publication can be found here: www.game.de/en/game-environmental-guide.

game is a Global Supporter of the Green Games Summit on 20 and 21 October 2021 right ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference

Game is a Global Supporter of the first Green Games Summit on 20 and 21 October 2021. The digital summit will take place right ahead of this year’s UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. The event will be hosted by the British games industry association Ukie, the umbrella organisation of the European games industry ISFE (Interactive Software Federation of Europe) and the UN-facilitated Playing for the Planet Alliance. The aim of the event is to give games companies around the world an overview of which activities and initiatives on the subject of environmental and climate protection already exist within the industry. A further goal is to show them how they can structure their business operations in a more climate-friendly manner. To register for the event, visit this link.

Environmental and climate protection are increasingly important factors in the games industry: for example, 76 per cent of games industry companies are involved in projects to promote more sustainable business practices. These include the reduction of energy consumption for power and heating, the use of green electricity and the separation of waste among many further measures, as game reported in June. game itself is already active in the field of environmental and climate protection: for instance, the game association office has been completely climate-neutral since 2021. Since mid-June 2021, the association has also been part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance, a partnership between the United Nations and the international games industry.
