Canadian animation school expands to Brazil
The largest educational institution of its kind in Canada, Vancouver Animation School (VANAS), will open in September its first class for Brazilian students residing in the country, and with special scholarships, as demand for LatAm content grows.
Ahead of the launch, VANAS will host a free professional animation workshop for aspiring artists in the region, broadcasting it live over Zoom on July 31 and September 4. These classes will cover concept art and 3D animation. Former Disney animator and head of faculty of Vancouver Animation School, Calvin Leduc, will showcase the methodology of the school as well as animation concepts. Illustrator Todd Marshall (Jurassic Park) will teach conceptual art and VANAS CEO and founder Mario Pochat, who is recognized for his works in Garfield-A Tail of Two Kitties (2006) and Dead Rising 3 (2013), will also be joining.
VANAS’s first fall term in Brazil starts on September 27, with application deadlines on August 1 and September 1. The two-year course is available to Brazilian citizens who are able to take the program online. In addition to animation courses, VANAS also offers classes in visual effects and video games towards earning vocational certificates, diplomas and university pathways.
Founded in 2010, Vancouver Animation School is a fully accredited online school offering advanced programs for the animation, visual effects, and video game industries. The company offers vocational certificates, diplomas, and university pathways in a variety of art and technology, media, and design fields. In 2013, VANAS became the first 100 per cent online institution to be fully accredited by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA), a regulatory body in British Columbia, Canada. The institution frequently offers free tutorials on its YouTube channel.

The school’s expansion into Brazil comes as the region’s content ecosystem continues to grow. Recent data from Parrot Analytics shows that demand for locally made programming continues to grow in Latin America, with shows like Brazilian studio Bromelia’s preschool series Galinha Pintadinha topping kids’ watch lists.Disney+ recently teamed up with Brazilian streamer Globoplay to make both content libraries available as part of a bundle deal. Brazilian kidsnet Gloob, meanwhile, has a longstanding partnership with LA toon house ZAG and Paris-based Method Animation to co-produce smash-hit animated series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir
