The strong line-up includes two films by filmmakers who have previously won the EFA feature animation award: the stop-motion Savages by Claude Barras, who won in 2016 for My Life as a Zucchini, and the hand-drawn They Shot the Piano Player by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, who won in 2011 for Chico and Rita.

Another key contender is Gints Zilbalodis’s Flow, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard sidebar of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and was a big hit at Annecy in June, earning more awards than any other title in competition this year.

The other two nominees – Isabel Herguera’s Sultana’s Dream and Kristina Dufková’s Living Large – were both winners at Annecy this year too, winning the Contrechamp Grand Prix and Contrechamp Jury Award respectively.

The committee which decided on the nominations was comprised of representatives of the European Film Academy and CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film.

The 2024 European Film Awards will be held in Switzerland  on Saturday, December 7, in Lucerne.
