Global Game Jam Announces Two Major Updates: Revised Game Archive Policy Starting 2027 & Extended Deadline for Rising Tide #4 Co-Development Jam

Global Game Jam (GGJ) has unveiled two critical updates for the global game creator community: a long-term revision to its game archive storage policy that will take effect in 2027, plus a deadline extension and upgraded prize pool for the ongoing Rising Tide #4 collaborative jam co-hosted with Blue Ocean Games. The dual announcements bring important adjustments to GGJ’s historical data preservation mechanism while offering extra opportunities for independent developers to showcase their prototypes and secure funding support.
Part 1: New Rolling 4-Year Game Archive Policy (Effective 2027)
After two years of cross-board review, data analysis and cost evaluation, the GG Board of Directors unanimously approved a full overhaul of the platform’s game archive maintenance rules, triggered by soaring server hosting costs, aging legacy website infrastructure, persistent security vulnerabilities and low long-term archive access volume.
Core Policy Adjustments
- Rolling 4-Year Playable Game Storage MechanismFrom 2027 onward, GGJ will only retain playable downloadable game files from the four most recent consecutive Global Game Jam events. All game builds created earlier than this four-year rolling window will no longer be hosted online for direct download. This rule applies to all future jam cycles permanently.
- Complete Permanent Preservation of Historical MetadataWhile old playable game files will be phased out, GGJ will fully retain all historical statistical metadata covering every site across all 10,000 global jam locations since the event launched in 2009. Preserved data includes site names, geographic locations, total jam participant numbers, and full lists of all game titles submitted each year. Users can filter and query historical records by site dimension indefinitely via the official website.
- Full Retention of All Jam Event General RecordsAll official event archives, activity summaries and public statistical data generated throughout GGJ’s 17-year history will remain permanently accessible online without deletion.
Root Causes for the Policy Shift
- Unbearable Ongoing Technical & Hosting CostsGGJ’s total archive data exceeds 17 TB, covering over 100,000 games made by more than 500,000 creators across four discontinued website versions (V1–V3, 2009–2023). Annual hosting fees reach approximately $6,000, excluding dedicated technical labor costs. Upgrading legacy sites to meet modern security and compliance standards would require a one-time investment of $50,000–$75,000, equal to roughly 15% of GGJ’s annual budget. As a public charity with depleted financial reserves, the organization cannot sustain this expenditure without violating fiduciary responsibilities. Multiple grant applications for archive preservation have also been rejected amid tightened corporate and public cultural funding.
- Severe Security & Compliance Risks of Legacy PlatformsArchive versions V1 and V3 run on end-of-life Drupal 6/7 frameworks with no official security patches available, exposing GGJ to malware intrusion, unauthorized data leakage and violations of international digital privacy regulations. Outdated server environments also create irreparable compatibility gaps with current cloud systems.
- Low Long-Term Archive Utilization RateOver 99% of all archive access requests happen within one year of each jam’s conclusion; fewer than 15 users requested access to V1/V2 archives in the two years after those sites were taken offline. Most vintage jam games are incompatible with modern operating systems and cannot receive post-submission updates, limiting practical usability.
Official User Backup Timeline for Legacy Games
- July–November 2026: Version 3 (2014–2023 games) opens for download on the first 7 days of each month; a dedicated request form launches for creators to retrieve V1/V2 (2009–2013) game packages via registered email verification.
- December 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027: V3 stays continuously online for full bulk downloading.
- March 1, 2027: V1, V2 and V3 legacy platforms are permanently shut down; only metadata remains retrievable on the current V4 website.
Offline Historical Archive Donation Plan
GGJ plans to produce a complete offline hard-drive archive covering all 2009–2023 game assets, donating free copies to at least two archival institutions/museums across separate continents to safeguard game development research materials. Additional institutions may purchase duplicate offline archives at production and shipping cost.
Part 2: Rising Tide #4 Jam Deadline Extended & Prize Pool Expanded
GGJ and partner Blue Ocean Games have extended the submission cutoff for the Rising Tide #4 joint game jam to noon PST on July 17, offering a grace period for creators delayed by academic finals, seasonal holidays and other schedules.
Major Upgrades for Participants
- Expanded Reward ScaleBlue Ocean Games adds 60 additional winning slots and $4,500 extra cash prizes, drastically raising contestants’ chances of earning awards. Top winners will also receive priority consideration for game investment funding of up to $300,000 to further develop their prototype concepts.
- Genre-Based Independent Judging SystemVoting and evaluation will be split into six independent genre tracks to enable fair side-by-side comparison among similar works:
- Strategy & Tactics
- RPG & Fantasy
- Casual/Simulation/Cozy
- Horror/Roguelike/Survival
- Shooters/Action/Combat
- Adventure/Platformer/Narrative Each category carries its separate set of cash and development rewards.
- Flexible Trailer Revision PolicyCreators who have already submitted their game trailers may keep existing entries or upload revised, polished cutscenes before the new deadline.
