China Now Biggest Theatrical Market For ‘The Boy And The Heron’
Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning film “The Young Man and the Heron” has been the biggest box office hit to date in China, raking in more than 700 million yuan.
That figure makes China the biggest theatrical market for The Young Man and the Heron, surpassing its home country of Japan ($56 million).
Studio Ghibli and Mr. Miyazaki have a huge following in China. The silks showed great enthusiasm for the Oscar-winning film. The film has surpassed Universal DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” and has now grossed more than 300 million yuan in the Chinese market.
Worldwide, The Boy and the Heron has earned a total of $114 million, making it Miyazaki’s second-highest grossing film, behind Spirited Away.
