Netflix Games Announces Strategic Shift: Removing Classic Title GTA: San Andreas to Revamp Service
As part of its ongoing transformation in the gaming sector, Netflix Games recently announced the removal of 13 mobile games, including the iconic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This move follows the platform’s earlier decision to take down 22 games this summer, marking another significant step in its evolving content strategy.
According to data from analytics firm Appmagic, GTA: San Andreas is Netflix Games’ most-downloaded title to date, with approximately 57.4 million installs. Other entries in the series, GTA: Vice City and GTA III, which launched on the platform in December 2023, were removed a year later, having accumulated 9.6 million and 4.2 million installs respectively during that period. Additionally, popular titles such as the interactive narrative app Scriptic with 7.7 million installs) will also be phased out.
Games Scheduled for Removal:
- November 30: Reigns: Three Kingdoms
- December 4: Civilization VI
- December 7: Scriptic
- December 8: Dungeon Boss: Respawned, Dust & Neon, and six other titles
- December 11: GTA: San Andreas, Kentucky Route Zero, Twelve Minutes
Refocusing on Four Key Game Genres
At this year’s Game Developers Conference GDC), Netflix Games President Alain Tascan revealed that the company is restructuring its gaming portfolio around four core categories: party games, kids’ games, narrative experiences, and mainstream blockbusters. Tascan emphasized Netflix’s long-term commitment to the gaming industry, outlining plans to develop a social gaming experience akin to Fortnite. He also projected that the platform’s 2025 lineup would help Netflix “find its voice” in gaming.
Data Insights and Future Plans
Netflix Games has reached an estimated 396 million lifetime downloads. In the platform’s download rankings, GTA: San Andreas holds the top spot, followed by Squid Game: Unleashed—a free title accessible even to non-subscribers—with 28.4 million installs. Despite removing several classic titles, Netflix recently announced the upcoming addition of Red Dead Redemption, WWE 2K, and a variety of family-friendly party games to its catalog by the end of the year, signaling continued expansion of its gaming offerings.
This content adjustment reflects Netflix Games’ strategic focus as it refines its business model and content positioning. Whether its genre-specific approach will achieve long-term success remains a key point of interest for the industry.
